The Power of Community

Proverbs 17:17

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

1. What does the passage say?

  • True friends love at all times, not just in good moments.
  • A brother (or sister) is meant for adversity, meaning that community is essential in tough times.
  • God created us to support one another, share our gifts, and build each other up.

2. What does this mean?

Who

  • Who benefits from community? → Everyone.
  • Who should we surround ourselves with? → People who encourage, challenge, and uplift us.

What

  • What does this verse teach about relationships?
    • Friendships and community should be consistent, not conditional.
    • A real friend stands by you in tough times, not just when it’s convenient.
    • We are called to support and serve each other with our skills and strengths.
  • What happens when we isolate ourselves?
    • We become weaker in trials.
    • We miss out on wisdom, encouragement, and shared knowledge.
    • We struggle alone instead of growing together.

Why

  • Why did God design us for community?
    • To complement each other’s strengths.
    • To help one another in times of need.
    • To sharpen and refine each other’s character

Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

  • Why do some people struggle with community?
    • Fear of trusting others due to past hurt.
    • A desire for independence over interdependence.
    • Not realizing that we all need help and have something to offer.

How

  • How can we strengthen our community?
    • Offer our skills – Share our knowledge, expertise, and talents.
    • Be present in others’ lives – Support friends and family, not just in good times but in hardships.
    • Seek relationships that build, not drain – Choose people who encourage growth.
    • Give and receive help – Allow others to support you as much as you help them.

3. How can I live this out?

Identify your strengths – What skills or wisdom can you share with your community?
Be intentional – Reach out to someone who may need support today.
Surround yourself with the right people – Build relationships that reflect love, growth faith, and encouragement.

💡 Reflection Question: Who in your life has been a friend or “brother in adversity”? How can you be that person for someone else today?

4. PRAY

“Lord, thank You for the gift of community. Help me to be a friend who loves at all times and a support to those in need. Show me how to share my skills, wisdom, and love with others. Lead me to the right people and teach me to walk in unity, always reflecting Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Thought

God designed us to grow together, not alone. Just as every part of the body has a function (1 Corinthians 12:12-27), we each have something valuable to offer. Let’s embrace community, support one another, and build a network where everyone thrives.
